EXCALIBUR Athlete's Forged Performance:
EXCALIBUR Athlete’s Forged Performance begins with a simple premise: to make athletics and fitness available to homeschool parents and guardians as an essential part of a child’s curriculum. This is so that homeschooled children can have the same advantages as students in public schools.
Health, fitness, and sports improve the mind, body, and soul in early childhood development, supporting balance, stamina, coordination, and cognitive progress.
Published in September 2024, this book is written for parents and homeschoolers who want sports, resistance training, and conditioning to serve as the basis of their child’s health of mind, body, and soul at once. The book argues that athletics is not an elective to academics’ education but essential. Endurance, strength, stamina, flexibility, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy, power, and speed are the same capacities that later show up in learning, work, and the long habit of staying useful.
What benefits the body also benefits the heart, mind, and soul, especially when a fitness routine carries a quiet, meditative component for mindfulness. Fitness can be a form of meditation for all of us to use. The benefits of fitness and sports programs are exponential in a prosperous life at every age. Health and fitness extend past school age and past our 30s to provide an age-defying benefit. In the photograph below, I am 68 years old and have worked out since my mid-teen years.
The practical hope of this book is to develop a self-coaching approach for homeschool students. It provides training for parents who want to teach their own children, coach them in a variety of sports, and build a health and fitness program for the whole household.
What is especially useful about sports is a means to notice deficiencies early, before they become barriers to the ability to learn. This book rests on the same basis as early childhood development: in addition to sports, a child is encouraged to start developing highly skilled hobby that can later become a second career in retirement years. It highlights that college is not the only pathway for a young teen to continue their education, and that vocational colleges should also be considered.
This book stresses the importance of one’s health, fitness, and sports in avoiding the ravages of life and aging. It presents that fitness is a weekly routine of keeping strength, skill, and purpose available for an abundant life. We are all given talents and skills to help others and to make a prosperous life for ourselves, sports and jobs can help uncover those talents and skills. This is why working in various jobs is important to a student’s development.
The name EXCALIBUR is the symbol for God’s Word, referring to the sword that King Arthur took from the rock. One does not have to use much imagination to understand what Sir Thomas Malory was referring to by using the sword and the rock—the same images the Apostle Paul refers to in Ephesians 6:17 as the sword of God’s Word and in 1 Corinthians 10:4 as the rock that was Jesus Christ.
Self-coaching, or autodidactic learning, is among the most effective means of learning, retaining, and applying knowledge. This is one reason homeschooled students often perform better not only on tests but also in their careers, based on self-coaching techniques that parents and children develop together. Parents remember this, if you want to learn a subject, teach that subject.
But the real benefit of EXCALIBUR Athlete’s Forged Performance is the athletic component it provides homeschooled students through sports such as golf or pickleball—non-contact sports that require little financial outlay for equipment. Even the fitness side, BAJA Fitness, is simple: based on dumbbells and a medicine ball for a full-body workout. Other equipment can be added as both parents and student progress.
That’s right, parents: this means you are going to be the coach and set an example for your child’s health and fitness, not only while they go through their homeschool curriculum, but into adulthood.
The golf training focuses on presetting the wrists with natural and instinctive techniques that we all developed before the age of 12. The Golfer’s Power Matrix allows the golfer to develop techniques for performing in the zone. The technique rests on natural muscle-memory skills and on the self-coaching method called Apperception, in which students take existing skills developed in one sport—such as baseball, standing in the batter’s box—and develop a repeatable swing on the tee box.
Most barriers that students in sports and life will face are not a lack of effort or skill, but an inability to use proper technique to succeed. The same is true in any area of life. Another barrier is relying on the conscious mind, where our training starts, without transitioning to the subconscious mind, where we can perform in the zone. Performance in sports has to become second nature.
Faith is another word for perseverance, and we must work to develop a well-established routine. An athlete’s performance has to be based on skilled muscle memory and confidence. An athlete who tries to think through an entire performance derail that performance.
The sword in the title is therefore not decoration. It is the image of performance forged until it can be trusted under actual conditions and kept sharpened with practice.
